A Brief History of the Little White Church in Stony Plain

Nestled just north of Stony Plain on Highway 16, the iconic white clapboard church has been a beloved landmark since its construction in 1912. For over a century, it served as the heart of the Hope Christian Reformed Church congregation, hosting countless services, weddings, funerals, and community gatherings. The chapel was more than just a building—it was a symbol of faith, perseverance, and the strong sense of community that defined the town.

As the congregation grew, they eventually moved to a newer facility in the 1980s. The historic chapel, while no longer used for regular worship, remained a treasured piece of Stony Plain’s heritage. In 2016, a group of local residents and former congregation members formed the Old Hope Society to ensure the building would not be lost to time. Their goal was simple: preserve the history, restore the structure, and make it accessible to the community for generations to come.

Over the past decade, the society has undertaken extensive renovations, including roof replacement, exterior painting, interior restoration, pew repairs, and reinstallation of the original cross. Thanks to these efforts, the church now shines as a fully restored historical landmark.

Today, the little white church is ready to welcome new life as a venue for weddings, community events, and gatherings of all kinds. While it no longer functions as a place of worship, it continues to celebrate the town’s history and foster connections within the community.

The story of this chapel is a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together to honor its past while creating space for the future.
